  1. It's jettisoned over the landing field first.

The plane will fly a bit low, and release the banner in a designated area to be retrieved by someone on the ground.

The cross bars in the banner to keep it "square" and readable from the ground would make it too dangerous to land with the banner attached.

An aircraft (small plane) picks up the banner by flying low over the ground.  The banner is laid out on the ground, and the cable for the banner is suspended between two crossbars that the place catches with a hook, and pulls the banner up and away.

  2. At the rear of the aircraft is a hatch with a spindle that unrolls and allows the banner to furl out the back. On final approach for landing the banner is reeled back in and viola it is like it doesn't exist.

  3. The pilot has a way to jettison the banner before landing.  They will make a low pass, over the drop point and drop it.  Likewise, the pilot will take off, fly to the pick-up point, dive down and hook the banner to pick it up.
