Aussie Rules has 18 players a side on an oval (not rectangular) field.  You can kick or hand-pass in any direction.  Like Rugby you can only tackle someone with the ball and if you catch the ball on the full (a "mark") you can stop and take your time to kick if you want to.  You score points by working the ball to your attacking end of the field and kicking it preferably through two tall middle posts - worth six points.  If you just miss (going between two other outer posts) you score 1 point.

Other differences:

Australian Rules players are fitter, tougher and game enough to wear tight shorts.

Australian Rules players string several words together into things called 'sentences' in the post match interviews

In Rugby the principal feature is a scrum, which is essentially one man pushing two men's heads up three men's butts ...

Glad you asked- but that's like asking: 'what's the difference between tennis and baseball?'  It is a very exciting time with finals in both codes.    You'll find that Australia has strong support for each code in different states.  Victoria is the original home of aussie rules(AFL) and almost everyone follows an AFL team.  A good number of Victorians have no idea how to play rugby league, though rugby union has wider understanding across the nation.  My familly is from Vic and even though some of them live in Queensland- most of them have no idea how to play rugby!  New South Wales has very strong support for Rubgy League (don't really care about AFL), as does Queensland- but there are a lot of people living in Queensland whose families came from Victoria, so there's support for AFL as well.  I've only lived on the east coast, so I can't talk about the other states.  However, I assume that Western Australia strongly supports AFL as they have two teams in the national league.

Many people in Australia follow only one code and might not have much understanding of other codes.

The best way to get an understanding is to watch games with someone who knows what's going on.  Hope you can find someone and enjoy the games.

It is a bit like comparing soccer to basketball cause they use a similar shape ball. Rugby is more like American football  with the same objectives except you can only tackle the player holding the ball and you can never pass forward only backward. So two teams face each other in a line and while passing the ball backward try to charge through the opposition to score a try (touchdown), you have a limited number of plays like American footy before you have to turn the ball over.

Aussie rules is completely different to both - someone else can explain that one.
