How is bamboo split?

Question

I have harvested a 10 year old bamboo crop and would like to build a few things out of it. I have tried to split it to make slats without much luck.

Here is a HGTV video of how to split bamboo.  Notice the special type blade used for splitting.

The link below gives you a diagram of how to split bamboo.  Although it is for splitting kite splines the method would be the same, only you would be making one split of a longer length.
