  1. Generally, a small incision (about 3 mm) is made in the cornea.  Small instruments are inserted and used to break up, and remove, the cataract.  An implant is positioned in the place where the cataract was and generally has your prescription calculated into it.  This means you may not need glasses for distance.  They do make bifocal implants as well.  The incision is so small, it generally does not require stitches.  A shield is placed over the eye until the next day when the surgeon will evaluate your progress.  You are evaluated over a period of 6 weeks and then are generally released to your usual eye care routine.
