How is daily life in Nepal for xpats? How dangerous is the political situation there?

  1. Check the state dept. web site.  under travel&busniess They have notes on every country. And they list travel restrictions. Check the link below it was last updated 01/06.

Things have changed somewhat since I visited in 2003 but my feeling then was that foreign residents were very comfortable.  I assume that you would not be working for either the US government or the Royal Nepali Army.  Before treking in Annapurna my buddy and I checked in with the embassy there to get an updated view.  The guy I talked to there gave us an extremely conservative and grim picture of the Maoist controlled areas.  We went anyway and found that though the "Yankee Go Home" Graffiti was less than amusing the actual Maoist Representative collecting Maoist treking permits was fine.  I will note that we claimed Canadian citizenship as the price changes from around $13 to $100.  Generally though the cities are as safe as you can expect in one of the poorest countries in the world.
