How is economics related to other fields of social sciences?

I've been wondering the same thing for months!  Economics is a rigorous discipline based upon sound mathematical and deals with the production and distribution and consumption of goods and services and their management.  It is entirely unclear to me what makes this a "social science."  Even Alfred Nobel felt that Economics is a discipline worthy of its own Prize as it has such critical applications to mankind.

It's undfortunate, in my humble opinion, that Economics is grouped under the same subheading and "Gender & Ladies' Studies" wherein much of the discussion is centered around shaving habits and the like.

Economics is a social science because it is focussed on the decisions that people make. One Nobel* prize winner has even gone so far as to say that economics is nothing more than studying rational decisions in every area (from consumption and production, to marriage, discrimination and crime).

There are quite poor links between economics and the other social sciences. The others tend to assume to little rationality among people, and economics perhaps too much. Subjects like geography often try to teach some basic economics but they often get it wrong. Politics and economics have a huge crossover, however, and you'll probably find in most university departments, these two are least at each other's throats, even if they keep their distance.

*Gary Becker. Alfred Nobel, incidentally, did not endow an award for the Nobel in economics. That came much later, from the bank of Sweden (1969) and, as such, some snobs don't consider the Nobel in economics to be "real".

Simply, the more you are part of social situations and the more you analyze them the more ROI on your time you get. :)
