How is egyptian hieroglyphics read from left to right or right to left?

  1. The first line hieroglyphic faces in the direction the passage is to be read. You can write, left to right, right to left and top down.


  2. Check to see what direction the birds are looking. You read in the direction of the bird's line of sight, but up and down instead of side to side.

  3. We write left to right to not smear the ink. lol  Ancient man had a way of thinking that we have lost. To them, everything had meaning. They were not as sure about their survival as we are. They could not make mistakes and sought the gods for help. Of course, you would not want to make a god mad by writing to them the same as you would write to a person. People walked on a horizonal plane and gods were up and below, so go figure. This thought still remains in symbol form.  

  4. Every direction, except bottom to top!
