  1. Sounds nasty doesn't it? It is. Maggots are no fun.

My experience is the first thing you should is clean the affected area and remove any dead tissue. Then use a generous amount of antibiotics.

    Seek medical assistance if needed.

How many pets do you have?

(too bad I have to go right now, sorry)

  2. It all depends on the airline affected.

If the carrier is a mainline carrier (one of the majors such as United, Lufthansa, Delta, British Airways, etc.) they will often interline tickets to other carriers who have availability and/or standby availability.  If it's a low-cost carrier (Southwest, Easyjet, etc.) you're pretty much out of luck since they don't have interline agreements.

The key is to look at the airline's contract of carriage.  It sets out what the airline is obligated to do in the event of a work stoppage.  Keep in mind that many airlines consider this a "force majeure" event and therefore they have written into their contracts that they don't have to do anything (other than refund your money).  While they will often do as much as they can as a customer service move, this doesn't always mean a lot to the casual flyer since airlines take care of their elite customers first.
