Question:

How is gas compressed into propane tanks?

I want to learn how to take the hydrogen gas I am creating via. electrolysis and store it in used, empty propane tanks. Someone please point me in the right direction as I have had no luck on youtube or google. I need to know what is required to get the gas into the tanks. I know it must take an air compressor pump of some sort, but I need details! I need to know what exactly is needed and how to do it.

If you know, please answer.

(and please don't bother if your answer is going to be along the lines of "you're going to blow yourself up" or any reason why you don't think I should be trying this)

thanks

  1. Propane is easy. You can do it with a bicycle pump, At about 90 psi., it will liquify. Hydrogen is not so easy. You have to compress it to several thousand psi. AND THEN cool it to some very low temperature to liquify it. It also has to be stored in a cryostat (very much like a thermos bottle) and be vented so that pressure does not build up. If you have a local welding gas supply store, they might have some literature that will help you realize how difficult this would be. The MSDS sheet for hydrogen (available online) will tell you some of the facts.
