How is heroic Mode unlocked for a dungeon in World of Warcraft?

I understand you need a heroic key for it to be unlocked but do you need to do anything else?

No, but to obtain each key for each dungeon/set of dungeons, you will need to gain Honored with each of the factions.

The keys are as follows:

Hellfire Citadel - Honor Hold (Alli) Thrallmar (Horde)

Auch - Lower City

Coilfang Reservoir - Cenarion Circle

TK- The Sha'tar

Caverns of Time - Keepers of Time

Magisters Terrace - Shattered Sun Offensive

This will tell you more about heroics, and more importantly, it will tell you where you can grind reputation with each faction :)

its mainly reputation based which as the previous poster said youwill need honoured then go tot he relevent vendor to purchase the key

i believe there are some in shatrath and the lower city in the cenarian refuge and honour hold

you will of course have to be level 70 for the heroic instances in the outlands

magitrar's terrace in the sunwell island of course will ahve to complete quests and the instance in normal mode to get into it in heroic mode

Certian keys unlock certain areas, to get the keys, you need rep in the repective faction
