  1. There is a test between each belt/degree.

This segment of an article explains it:

To advance from one rank to the next, students typically complete promotion tests in which they demonstrate their proficiency in the various aspects of the art before a panel of judges. Promotion tests vary from school to school, but may include such elements as the execution of patterns, which combine various techniques in specific sequences; the breaking of boards, to demonstrate the ability to use techniques with both power and control; sparring and self-defense, to demonstrate the practical application and control of techniques; and answering questions on terminology, concepts, history, and so on, to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the art. For higher dan tests, students are sometimes required to take a written test or to submit a research paper in addition to taking the practical test.

Yes, it's from Wikipedia, but I am in Tae Kwon Do and it is correct.

  2. you have to go through a tough test with my school and if the teacher doesn't like how you do your move he won't pass you

  3. In BJJ, several years of hard work.

    E

  4. Your teacher/Sensai would but you through a testing on how well you preform the moves/kicks/blocks/etc. If you do well you pass to the next belt rank.

  5. Your Sensei (Teacher) decides when you are ready. Usually based on skills, discipline and self control.

Yes there is a ritual ceremony.

  6. ay ay ayyyy.....

truth. it depends on where you study. what you study, who you study with. and what art you're studying..as well as where it's from...and how "traditional it is"

there is no single answer to this question.

most times there is a test...you either pass or fail. unfortunately in alot of tip tap point karate or tkd "Mcdojos" ...most people pass no matter what.

some just hand you a belt...some have a ritual.

some test as a group. some test individuals.

    not everyone learns forms "kata..hyungs..poomse..whatever"

suffice to say its just like school

you have this material to study and be proficient in before advancing to the next grade. in order to tell whether or not you may continue to that next grade...you have some sort of test to take to prove your knowledge. (not necessarily your skill level)

the different belts can be like road markers. they tell you, and others...where you have been, and where you have yet to go. it says nothing of how "good" you are. just that you do infact have the knowledge, and have infact been there.

a white belt is kindergarten..up to first degree black belt, you are in grade school. from 1st dan to say 4th dan...you're in college....when you reach 5th or 6th dan (generally speaking) you are considered "master" or some other title. which would be like getting your masters degree.

from there your knowledge and learning never stop. but much of it isnt specific material to learn...but your life experience in practicing your craft in every day life.

  7. no you memorize a series of movements called a form. after a certan amount of time you do your form infront of the blackbelts of the school. you also do other things but i wont go into that. the judges score you and decide weather you should go to the next belt or not.

    simply put

  8. We learn a new form, a certain amount of self-defense, IE knife defense open hand defense club defense.  we break boards, we grapple and spar.  The teacher decides when we test.

  9. It may be different at each Dojo, but at mine you have to fulfill a series of tasks (sparring, katas, push ups, etc.) that you're Sensei signs you off on. After that (and like always) they watch your progress and when the Sensei thinks you are ready for your belt promotion, they will give it to you. Hope this helps.

  10. when the masters tell you you progress
