I am going on a student exchange program to a university in France. Since the term length is more than 90 days (110 days), I was not issued a schengen visa but a Long Stay visa (Type D) was issued. This had the the words "Dispense temporaire carte de sejour" written on it which as per my understanding does not allow me to apply for a residence permit in France. Now given the huge amount of free time that I would have, I would have loved to see lot of other parts of Europe which I cannot do with the current visa issued to me.
What can I do to travel to other parts of Europe? I believe applying for a tourist schengen visa to other schengen countries is risky since they have problems with the French visa stamped on my passport. Some of my friends have had their visa rejected in similar circumstance.
I would really appreciate if someone can give me a solution to this problem. Further, should I apply to consulates in my home country or in consulates in France after reaching there.
