Question:

How is it possible for me to roam around in Europe with a Type D visa from France?

I am going on a student exchange program to a university in France. Since the term length is more than 90 days (110 days), I was not issued a schengen visa but a Long Stay visa (Type D) was issued. This had the the words "Dispense temporaire carte de sejour" written on it which as per my understanding does not allow me to apply for a residence permit in France. Now given the huge amount of free time that I would have, I would have loved to see lot of other parts of Europe which I cannot do with the current visa issued to me.

What can I do to travel to other parts of Europe? I believe applying for a tourist schengen visa to other schengen countries is risky since they have problems with the French visa stamped on my passport. Some of my friends have had their visa rejected in similar circumstance.

I would really appreciate if someone can give me a solution to this problem. Further, should I apply to consulates in my home country or in consulates in France after reaching there.

  1. what is written on your your visa #  As a general rule, if you are staying for less than 6 months, your visa will state that you are exempt from obtaining a recidence permit (“dispensé temporaire de carte de séjour”). #

    so, your visa is good to travel within Europe;

    just make sure you have all your papers with you when traveling;

    NOTE:

    the UK is not part of the schengen zone;

  2. My friend was issued the same type of Visa and was told by the Immigration officer at the port of entry which was Paris that she was able to Travel around The Shenghen countries..but once she left she couldn't return til she got a new visa because her visa was only valid for 1 entry  into France and not multiple entry.She is from Indian...

    In reality its also very easy to travel because There are no internal bother within shenghen countries...so lets say you wanted to Travel

    By plane or train to Amsterdam or Brussels..There wouldn't be any passport control or immigration.

    But if in the other hand you wanted to Travel to London or to Ireland for a weekend..Then yes you would have immigration check.

    Your passport will be checked at the first Shenghen country you enter and wont be checked again until you leave the Shenghen space

    which include

    Austria

    Germany

    Belgium

    Denmark

    Finland

    France

    Greece

    Iceland

    Italy

    Luxembourg

    Norway

    Portugal

    Spain

    Sweden

    The Netherlands

    Also you don't say what your nationality is..That would really make a difference.

    Anyways have a wonderful trip!
