I just saw this interest news clip from the BBC website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7450263.stm) about a teacher in Afghanistan. She teaches in a girls' school, with about 60 students in a class, and has a salary of about 70 dollars per month. How is this possible? That would mean she pays maybe 35 dollars monthly for housing, and has 35 for everything else. And she's a teacher...

  1. they spend it wisely and olny buy essentianls

  2. Makes me wonder.

  3. A dollar might be worth more there?

  4. Depends what your definition of 'live' is.

  5. Since it is a different country, they probably have all sorts of different ways of spending their money there. They obviously don't go out to Abercrombie or McDonalds so they probably buy the essentials and stretch their money as much as they can. Also, she may not have to pay for her housing and other necessities(she may know the owner of her living situation). Also, the American dollar costs more in those sort of countries so if she was paid in US currency it would add up to more in her form of money.

  6. She might get free health care and free transportation and a lot of free benefits. I would assume that since she is still alive and teaching she must have free benefits plus cash money under the table and makes it.

  7. I imagine in really poor countries, 70 US dollars can (still) go a long way.
