How is it possible that only 92 elements are found in the natural world but there are millions of different types of molecules?

  1. the molecules  are made synthetically in the laboratory.  by combining and reacting different chemicals together at specific conditions which are the standards for the molecule.


  2. Think of it in the same way that the english language works. There are 26 letters, however English has hundreds of thousands of words which are combined to create many words with many properties (meanings, context, etc). These are then governed by laws such as grammar, and rhetoric.

    In this same way the elements on the periodic table have very specific qualities that in many ways are 'periodic' or show up in different groups, columns, rows. This gets more complicated as we take a closer look at things like electron affinity, bonding, atomic radius size, etc. In this way, many of the atoms have an affinity to bonding with other molecules.

    Reactive atoms, polar molecules, and especially free radicals and charged ions are generally more stable and are attracted to other atoms which together would fil ltheir outer electrons. You will learn many different reasons for why atoms bond in your chemistry class.

  3. Because the elements join up in different numbers and with different elements. Which if you think about it can make millions of compunds. Like if you had a pin number for your credit card with 92 different numbers rather than just 4, there would be billions of combination.

    E.g. oxygen- is a diatomic molecule O2, however is can also be O3 which is ozone, or it can bond with hydrogen to form water, or hydroxide, and then with zinc to form zinc hydroxide. See what I mean?
