How is it possible to wiretap a landline talking with someone in the US?

I taked to someone in Montana from Alberta on a landline. A local farmer picked up the conversation and repeated some of the conversation. I was on a landline..the MT party on a portable phone.

It depends.

I know its easy if your at the house (not inside) you probably had a cross connection. That means the lines in your area by the provider need to be replaced with new up-to-date cables.

That was a very common problem in the day when the carriers had cheap cables that would "cross" each other, making you able to hear other people talk, you could even talk back depending on the connection.
