  1. the clouds aren't covering the sun...

  2. This happens when the clouds from which the rain is falling are not directly overhead where the sky is clear and the cloud bases are considerably higher than usual because of drier air near the surface.  The winds between the cloud base and the surface are blowing the rainfall toward the clear space on the surface.

If the air near the surface is dry enough and warm enough, the rain may even evaporate before it reaches the ground.  This condition is called virga.

  3. There are rainclouds covering the sky, but then there are areas in the sky that are clear and has no clouds covering.

  5. There have been many times where it's cloudy but sunny at the same time. It's when the clouds overhead are rain clouds. So it's the same as sunny and cloudy.

It reminds me of the 7up commercials. They said when it was sunny and rainy it was 7up!! LOL
