How is it that the Indian Railways is making profits suddenly after all these yrs?

It is all because of Laloo Prasad Yadav (when i speak of him i even mean the administrators under him). He introduced enw policies and pricing and guidelines. These have helped the Railways prosper. Hehas even removed some unwanted and unneccesary regulations that existed before.

But most importantly, he has privatised small sections in many areas and given contracts to private firms who increase efficiency. He has even introduced better condition of food and stalls at stations, this incourages tourists and health concious people to buy from the railways now unlike before.

Due to lalu parsad yadav .as he is a man who cumes frm society of poor class......he knows best how to tackle problems of middle class........he is playing best role by making policies acc. to the perspective of middle class n there needs n pocket money

It is due to better utilization of Information Technology.  Previously a number of seats/berths would remain vacant in number of trains.  The manual process of reservation was cumbersome and prone for corruption.  With introduction of computerized reservations, the system of RAC, TATKAL, automatic upgradation etc the occupancy rate has increased manifold and this has resulted in profits.  This is only an example. Similar is the case with goods transport, turnaround of wagons etc.

The IT has also brought in transparency in procurement decisions, thus bringing down the costs.  

The contribution of Laluji is that he encouraged the IT people and did not stand in their way.  There is some Indian Railway Service or IAS officer who Laluji trusts in full and implements all his recommendations.

The steps like online reservations, outsourcing of certain services also have helped in bringing down the staff costs.
