Okay after the initail explosion of the singularity that was the universe/big bang, the universe started expanding. with no forces acting apon it to slow it down and no new dark energy being created what is increasing the speed of the universes expansion

  1. The expanding speed isn't increasing it's decreasing!

If it was increasing, the universe would now be so big, we couldn't even see our Sun!

The first second after the Big Bang space got somewhere this big in less than a second.

Bullet-proof proof that the speed is decreasing.

Soon it will turn around and space will implode into the same singularity.

The singularity will then explode again...

    And again...

    And again...

    That's the theory anyway ;)

  2. We're trying very hard to figure that out.

    Stay tuned.......

  3. Here is a link that could help:

    cassini.mps.ohio-state.edu/~ryden/ast2...

It is on the last couple frames.

It really isn't speeding up, it is actually slowing down.

  4. It's not really clear that the universe's rate of expansion is increasing, but there is some evidence that points to that.

If it is expanding, the scientific explanation given is "dark energy" which is a fancy way of saying "We have no idea why this is happening".

  5. Science believes that a source of dark energy is behind the continuing expansion of the universe.
