Because that woman has espoused the ideas of abstinence only and no birth control and no s*x before marriage, making it an issue.

It isn't her daughter, it is that she made the issue herself.

They can't handle it when they actually have to practice what they preach.  Now, if the girl had run out and aborted the baby, then been outed by the media, they'd all be on the girl's side.

But, they are living their beliefs and being bashed for it by those who live with and stand by a principled life.

Actually, sounds pretty desparate to me, they can't find anything else so they're going after this.

As far as family values failing - show me one home that teenagers don't rebel in some way to their parents - the ones that are the most vocal here were probably the most rebellious.  Kids will do what kids do.  I have never heard the republicans saying that there are no teen pregnancies in their homes.  I have heard them say that life is precious and when this happens that the choices to make are to parent the baby or to place for adoption.

And I hardly think that a political figure's daughter having a baby at 17 is going to do more than Britney or Jamie Spears did to teens following them.

Wow, I just love how all these Democrats say that it is the Governor's fault that her daughter is pregnant.  Really?  Mrs. Palin caused her daughter to have s*x?  I think not.

For all you nitwits, "abstinence only" s*x education does NOT teach that birth control is bad or wrong or unavailable.  It teaches that there are very good reasons for NOT having a baby outside of marriage and it teaches the CONSEQUENCES of having unprotected s*x.  The whole point is to reach kids with some values and teach them how to make better choices.  My daughter's "abstinence only" s*x ed class taught the kids plenty - and objectively - about birth control.  

Believing in abstinence until marriage doesn't mean you don't believe in birth control.  Those are completely separate issues.  

So Bristol and her boyfriend Levi made the decision that they were going to ignore the values they had been taught AND they were going to ignore what they knew about birth control.  This isn't the fault of either set of parents.  The kids are 17.  They're too old to be chaparoned every minute of every day.  They're old enough to be trusted.  They're old enough to know what they believe and they're old enough to act on those beliefs.  They're also old enough to be responsible for the consequences of their actions.

Do I have any sympathy for Bristol and Levi, getting married much too young and having a baby to cope with from the very beginning?  NOPE.  Not one whit.  They were stupid, they made a selfish and stupid decision.  They're going to have a rough road ahead of them.  I'm glad they have the support of both their families, because they're going to need lots of emotional support to learn how to be a married couple and to learn how to be parents.

I'm just astounded that so many people think a 17-year-old should be allowed to have an abortion without parental consent, but if she decides to get married and have the baby somehow it's her mother's fault.  

By the way ... I don't remember who among the libs here made the nasty comment about how this baby can't be a blessing.  Where is  your common sense?  This baby is a blessing, no matter when or how it was conceived.  What matters to the Palins is that their daughter made a mistake, she's made the decision regarding the baby's life, and everybody moves on from here.  Were her parents furious?  Probably.  Disappointed?  Most definitely.  Do they wonder where they went wrong in teacher her their values?  Of course.  Do they understand that at 17 they can't control her decisions?  Yes.  Amazing.  Personal responsibility.  That's the difference between liberals and conservatives.  Live with the consequences of your decisions.  And that's what Bristol and the Palin family are doing now.

And for crying out loud, do none of you have anything better to do that slam a 17-year-old who acted just like most of you did at 17?

It's not that they're trashing her because her daughter got pregnant.  It's because conservatives (i.e. Republicans) have, for years, told everyone how they were the part of "morals and values".  Yet, when one of their members does something like this, all the Republicans turn their collective heads and go "Oh, well as Christians we're not perfect, so things like this are acceptable as long as you go and confess to THE LORD afterwords"  

If a Democrat were to do something like this (ahem, Bill Clinton, Gov. Spitzer, etc.) Conservatives jump all over them, pointing out how morally bankrupt their collective ideology is.

Because she is a hypocrite. She says that she believes in the family values, holier-than-thou evangelical agenda yet her own daughter is proof that she lacks those very same family values.

Not to mention it also reveals the unrealistic nature of abstinence-only education. While I believe abstinence is best (and yes, I AM a liberal. No I don't believe that teenagers should be having s*x), methods of protecting one's self should one choose to have s*x should be taught. It is the rumor that the Down Syndrome baby is really the daughters, not the mothers, that this girl is made to deny her own child,

I have 3 daughters and let me tell you once they reach  the age of 14, a mom's  influence ends or takes a backseat to  peer pressure. A mother can teach right and wrong and hope and pray the child learns, but there are many outside influences that will shape each child. A mother will stand beside her children even when she knows they have made bad choices, because that is what a mother does.

If a mother is responsible for all that her children do or become, then can we assume that Obama's mother  influenced him to be a liar. Because when you are a politician and in the public eye, anything that you do is under a microscope.  That is the rule of politics.  If you are running for any public office, your private life is not a barrier.  And if there is something in your private life that will upset voters.  Guess what?  Its on the news the next day.

Unfortunately, this is the case with all political parties.  If you are a public figure, and you have something in your past/present that will upset a "demographic" of voters.  Let it be known.
