How is lanolin obtained?

It says on this site the extration process is brutal and I would like a full reference on how it is mean. I figured who better to ask the Vegans and Vegitarians

  1. Lanolin is a product of the oil glands of sheep, extracted from their wool.

    I don't think that site is accurate. Lanolin is a by-product from the wool industry, and the Australian wool industry does involve extreme cruelty to animals. (See http://savethesheep.com/animals.asp ). Buying products with lanolin financially supports the wool industry in the same way that buying leather supports slaughterhouses. However, extracting lanolin from wool doesn't in itself cause any suffering.
