I want to be a music major in performance on trombone in university. I am wondering what life is like as an orchestral musician. How often do you work? What is the pay like? Any tips for me?

  1. There is always something to do. It all will depend on what the job is. and Where. Take it one day at a time. Get in to school. Work really hard. And it will be hard. I was a music major. It was a lib arts. 7 hours a day for class practice. Plus I had other classes I had to take. Don't think about what the dollar amount is. If your in a philharmonic it will be better than a community orchestra.  You live music. Everyday hours of preparation. Do it because there is nothing else in this world that will make you happier. I have played with some of the best in the state in my college days. Even some that were best in the nation. The first lesson I had to learn in College, I was no longer number one. I was in a group of number ones.  I have practiced until my fingers cracked open just to get one chair higher. Best of luck to you. And never lose sight of what you want out of your life. Cause it will get hard. As everything worth while in life should from time to time.
