How is lowes different from home depot?

They have the same basic items, but are different when it comes to decor like fans, light fixtures, and sinks and stuff.

Also Lowe's is a blue box and Home Depot is an orange box.

Home Depot is designed more towards Contractors. Lowes is designed more towards the gereral public. You'll see more household "stuff" in Lowe's than Home Depot.

Home Depot also has an area for "Contractors" to "check out" with their purchases. Both stores will accept competitor's coupons so watch them both!

Lowes has better lumber and the employees are far more knowledgeable and helpful.  Lowes also offers an employee discount.  Home Depot doesn't.

I prefer Lowe's:

- To work at Lowe's you have to be able to pee in a cup.  To work at Home Depot, all you have to be able to do is pee in a cup (i.e., mostly uninformed people work there).  Last week, my daughter had to explain to a Home Depot person what a "Level" was. (!!!)

- They carry a better selection of things I use most often.

- They have helpful little "Need Help?" buttons.  To me, time is money and they respond within 30 seconds, as they appear to be rated on this by their employer.  You can go on a shooting spree in Home Depot and not hit an OAG (Orange Apron Guy).  When you do find an OAG, they are often with someone else (wait), unknowlegeable, "on break," or "not my department.")

- Lowe's treats their employees better, from what I can see.

- Home Depot "contractors" are often disasters waiting to happen.

- Home Depot does not respect their customer.

- They carry some of the same brands.  They also carry some of the identical items, private labeled to their own brand.

A good friend of mine works at Lowe's.  At his store, they've gone through three general managers in five years.  I suppose this goes to show: (1) Not everyone they hire is good, (2) If you're not working out, they'll find someone that can do the job.

I've noticed Lowes caters more to home owners, where Home Depot caters more to the Contractors. My husband who is a contractor always buys his supplies there, they carry more bulk, they are cheaper, and have more items for the building part. Lowes is my favorite, because they have great selections of home items, okay prices, and the store and merchandise is very clean and yes it is air conditioned -huge plus in my book! They are also well lit up and it more like shopping in a variety store than an old hardware store!

In my area, Lowe's has ac on during hot weather, HD won't.
