    Luminosity is a term used by astronomers to refer to the radiation given off by stars and other objects.

    In the case of stars, the source of the light and other wavelength radiation is well-known. Stars shine because of nuclear fusion. In most stars most of the energy is from hydrogen nuclei (protons) fusing into the heavier helium nuclei. That's the short answer. Hope this helps.
