  1. COD or Desert Duck..  mail is usually first delivered to the Carrier and then distributed to the rest of the Battle group from there by helicopter .  or if operating alone, then flown in or delivered by supply ships.

Mail delivery can be limited to just once or twice a month though, especially if they are operating in a  Hot Theater.

  2. Some times things are flown out to aircraft then sent to other ships mostly supply ships deliver either by vertrep ( helocopter) or unrep.

I added some links. you can find more on youtube

  3. It is usually delivered by plane or helicopter.  Depending on what you are on, carrier or ship.

  4. The plane flies to the carrier, which is the center of the battle group...  The destroyers tie lines to the carrier and supplies, mail and fuel is sometimes sent over.  At other times a helicopter will make the mail drop to the destroyers and other ships in the fleet....  Happens quite often!

  5. By light transport plane to the nearest Aircraft Carrier in your operational area and then by helicopter to all vessels capable of helo landings. If your ship is not capable of helo landings you have to wait for the supply ship or other support vessel to come along side.

  6. "Carrier Pigeon"

  7. lots of great answers all correct..greetings shipmates...

    Served on CVN74,CVN75,AS31,AS32,LPD4, CG48, TAGOS16, DD974

  8. Usually helicopter or it comes from a supply ship.

  9. There are things called "MAIL BUOYS" scattered about the oceans of the world.  When a ship is in the area, a sea plane will land and attach the mail bag to the Mail Buoy.  There is a watch stationed on the bow of the smaller ships and the watch has a long pole called a BOW HOOK.  As the ship passes the Mail Buoy, the watch has to reach out and snag the mail bag.  This is one of the most important watches stood on U.S. Navy vessels.

Do people still write letters on paper to military folks?

  10. Either by helicopter or the ship gets the mail when they get into port by a mail truck.

When I was on a sub-tender we had to wait until we hit port and then someone would drive a van to the base post office and bring it back to the ship.

Our ship was never out to sea for more than a few days at a time. We were in some port more than at sea.

  11. By helicopter.

If you're close to land it will fly out to you.  If you're further out and near a carrier, it will be COD'd out to the carrier and helo'd to your ship.
