  1. Cortez was a bloodthirsty, European conqueror, and the other was his unsuspecting victim!

Both men were from tough, militaristic cultures that saw glory not shame in the domination and exploitation of weaker tribes.  Both were ambitious and talented men who used military skill as their personal ladder to success.   Finally, both allied themselves with the state churches of their societies in order to hasten their political ascent.

    The two were different in that Moctezuma seemed to actually believe the dogmas of the Aztec religion whereas Cortez was not inhibited in either thought or action by the teachings of Catholicism.
