  1. Just like spaghetti -- they mix up a melted gob of polymers and then squeeze it out through a small hole in the cylinder. (The size of the hole determines the thickness of the line and therefore its strength.) As it cools and hardens, it's wound onto a spool.

    I would assume that the speed of the extrusion has a lot to do with the quality of the line (as do the polymers and other chemicals and dyes used in the mix, cooling time, and so on.)
