Question:

How is my mile time?

I just joined Track this year, and up until then, I was previously NEVER a runner. I am a sprinter, and when I ran the mile in my P.E class, I got 8:22. I am 13 years old & in 7th Grade.

Is my time good for a first time runner?

How can I improve my time over the summer?

  1. its an okay time, but since youve never ran before a guess its pretty good! Over the summer you can improve by taking long jogs to increase endurance, and do some sprints such as 400m at race pace.

  2. Thats a good time for a beginner and easy to improve on. At first, just jog everyday, about a mile or two. Very quickly, u will begin to notice its becoming increasingly easier each day.

Now that your in shape, you can start to increase your pace little  by little till u are getting moderately fast. U are fit and ready to do some harder work now.

U are now a runner, congrats.

Now you can go to a local highschools track and practice speed work. U should do 400m sprints(1 lap) and 800m fast runs. This gets u stronger and your endurance up by alot. Along with the speed work, take longer and longer jogs, turning into runs. This makes your lung capacity stronger.

Follow this and u will shock yourself by how much u improved when u get back into school. Im also a 13yr old 7th grader (boy) and I run a 5.09 mile, just to prove to u that u can improve greatly if u keep at it.

Also, this is a very good website, look around there are also running plans- http://www.runnersworld.com/

  3. thats good!

and if you keep running you will get better!

when i was in 7th grade my mile time was around 8.40 and now im a freshmanand i can run it in 6.30!

run over the summer... every day if you can,

jogging will improve your time for a while but you will hit a point that it does nothing for you to improve your time, but hey your still out doing somthing instead of sitting on your butt!

keep working on it and good luck!

  4. Train hard over summer. If possible, run with your team-mates. It will keep you motivated and you can all help eachother at the same time. Focus on mileage for the first half of summer...speed does not matter at this moment, only accumulating miles. For the second half of the summer, go less miles but increase the speed. Throught the summer, dedicate at least one day a week to hills. Do repeat hills at your own pace, increase the speed as you feel more confortable, a slow jog down the hill is your recovery. As PE timing gets closer, focus a lot on your speed, form, and times.

    Hope this helps =]

  5. That is a good time.  You can improve by jogging.  But people that jog really slow never tend to improve.  Don't sprint, but keep a good pace going for as long as you can and over time you'll notice that you can run further distances without slowing down at that pace.  You can do it.

  6. thats a pretty good time. i got like twelve minutes. (i walked, because i don't like pe.) you can go runining in the summer and gradually you will be able to go farther. hope i helped!

  7. Your time is okay, not to make you feel bad but my 10 year old sister ran a 7:58 mile but she plays sports so i guess that might have helped her. The best way to improve your time over the summer is to either go on a variation of longer runs and then shorter sprints to work on your speed. But to make it more fun you should get involved with sports like lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, something where you'll get a lot of running in but it will be more fun because you'll be doing other things!
