Question:

How is overhead passing different from setting?

Is there a difference between the two? I know that I need to know how to overhead pass, but I don't want to be a setter. So, when I'm learning to overhead pass, should I be using the techniques that are used with setting?

Thanks - and if anyone has any tips for me on overhead passing, they would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Essentially you are setting the first hit on the ball.  The difference is that you are "passing" it to your setter with a set.

Sets are much more "picky" I guess than an overhead pass.  There has to be less rotation on a set for an attack, and an overhead pass can be much sloppier than a set can be.

Don't worry - learning to set will not make you a setter.  Setting is something that is an art.  I know - I am a hitter.

  2. theres not really much of a difference but some tips for setting:

when you get ready to set make sure your strong foot is forward bend your knees and set the ball using the power from your legs and arms.  Make sure if it's just a regular outside set make sure it's high and near the antenna.

believe me i set for my team and we went to Nationals

  3. the two are the same. Some tips for setting/overhead passing: Make sure you stay behind the ball. Get your feet set (no pun intended :]] ) before you contact the ball. If you have to set a serve, don't try to move your fingers like a normal set, just do a forward motion, and keep your hands firm. Hope I helped!!

  4. it's pretty much the same...

passing over head is easier cuz the refs will let u get away w/ a little double hit, setting (depending on the level u play @) not so much

but yeah make a triangle w/ ur hands and use ur finger tips

    good luck

  5. The only real difference is that the overhead pass goes to the setter and the set goes to a hitter.

The overhead pass is usually lower if your setter is in position.  It is really comparable to a slow shoot set.  You lob it toward your target.  If the setter is not in position, your overhead pass may look the same as the high set to the outside.

  6. Overhead passing is like a set..it can be like the first hit ...and the intention isnt to set up another person for the spike.,.it is a pass...a regular set is someone that sets up the ball for a hitter..

  7. its not
