During the primordial state of the Earth's atmosphere, there was very little free oxygen in the air. However, there were oxygen-based compounds that already existed such as water (H2O). Through a similar photosynthetic process used by plants today, anaerobic cyanobacteria, broke down the Di-hydrogen Oxide (H2O) to produce oxygen until it reached suitable levels for more complex aerobic organisms to develop.
