How is photosynthesis different from respiration?

Only plants can photosynthesise. However, all living things are able to respire (that includes plants, meaning they can do both simultaneously!)

Photosynthesis is basically the process where light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll and converted into chemical energy used in the synthesis of carbohydrates from water and carbon dioxide gas.

Respiration, on the other hand, is the process by which food substances are broken down/oxidised to release energy in living cells.

Well the first difference would be the photosynthesis uses light.

You can also talk about the difference in products made in the different stages of each.

photosynthesis:

1. light dependent reaction- ATP is produced, NADPH is produced, O2 is released into the atmosphere.

2. Calvin cycle makes glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate, glucose and water.

cellular respiration:

1. glycolysis makes 2ATP, 2NADH+H+, 2pyruvates;

2. the link reaction makes 2 Acetyl CoA, 2 NADH+H+, 2CO2;

3. the Krebs Cycle makes 2ATP, 6NADH+H+, 4CO2, 2FADH2;

4. the ETC makes38 ATP.

Also, photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of plants, specifically in the stroma and thylakoid.

During photosynthesis CO2 is taken in & O2 is liberated.

in respiration O2 ia taken in &CO2 is given out.

Light energy is used to synthesize food during photosynthesis.

Heat energy is liberated by breaking the food during respiration.

chemical equation for photosynthesis:

6 CO2(g) + 12 H2O(l) + photons → C6H12O6(aq) + 6 O2(g) + 6 H2O(l)

carbon dioxide + water + light energy → glucose + oxygen + water

The chemical equation for respiration is:

C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O

Glucose + Oxygen  Carbon Dioxide + Water

photosynthesis is building up process & respiration is the opposite of it i.e. breakingup process.
