How is rock paper an ecological alternative to cellulose paper?

Once minerals are extracted and consumed, we can't grow more minerals, but we can grow more plants. So I'm confused on how "rock paper" is an innovation.

If this article weren't on treehugger.com, I would say that ecological alternatives weren't being sought by this product. They didn't seem to be trying to make that argument, but indeed this does not appear to be an environmentally reasonable product.
