  2. One strategy implemented by wildfire control agencies is burning the fuel of the fire on mountainous, or hilly regions. The goal is to have the fire on one side of the mountain meet with a fire intentionally started from the base of the other side of the mountain at the peek of the hill. The hope is that the fire will not be able to travel down the other side of the mountain because the fuel will already have been expended. You might be able to find a more scientific explanation of this on the discovery channel web site.
