Hi,

There are many ways to market a small business on the web.  You can buy banner ads, text links, or use PPC.  However, the best way is to get listed in a bunch of portals. Portals and directories are like phone books, and they often provide a lot of traffic because they tend to rank high on Google.

Segmentation is of critical importance to today's marketer.

Segmentation is basically the practice of breaking down a total marketing audience into to very distinct groups based on various parameters - usually demographic details such as age, gender, and household income or in terms of psychographic details, which include individual buying habits, media habits, lifestyle habits, etc.

This in-depth knowledge allows marketers to conduct what is known as CRM, or Customer Relationship Marketing. This is basically highly customized direct mail and online marketing that is specific to each and every customer. CRM is highly effective, and benefits both the marketer and the customer. For the marketer, it means they are able to control  waste and create more efficient marketing messages. The customer benefits by receiving only those marketing messages that are of value to them.

Before the days of Segmentation, Marketers basically had to issue a generic message to a universal audience. But with the fragmenting of television, the advent of satellite radio, advances in direct mail and the explosion of the Internet, that is no longer the case.
