  1. Financially strained.

They have just introduced a programme where they plan to reduce the cruising speed to save fuel and thereby reduce costs. Apparently they save an average of $600 on every flight between California and Hawaii.

No thought for the passenger and the longer flight. They expect that they can reduce the turn-round time on the ground to compensate.

If the Trans-Atlantic open Skies scheme goes ahead they we be subject to more competition from European Airlines.

I believe they are currently in talks withe Delta Airlines with a view to a merger. Whether this will actually happen, your guess is as good as mine.

  2. going through a hard time

  3. An excellent airline.  They are the only domestic legacy carrier which has not declared bankruptcy.  Hence, the "playing field" is not quite level when it comes to their legacy competition: Delta, Northwest, Continental and USAir, all of which have reorganized through bankruptcy.

American's workers work for an airline with a long and rich history dating back to one of its first pilots, Chas Lindbergh.

There have been rough spots in its history including the recent grounding of airplanes.  Anybody who has worked for the industry and with the FAA knows there is more to the story there.  Generally, the FAA bureaucratic mess catches up with everyone and in this case it appears American was made a scape goat since the FAA had some recent embarasment with Southwest Airlines (another good carrier).

American's employees have taken paycuts to help keep the company solvent and, as in any organization, there are disgruntled employees,

I feel very comfortable with American because I know their training procedures for pilots and they are a benchmark of the industry.

  4. great airlines

  5. The reason for that strain is due to the fact that municipalities think they need their own airport to think they are important. So the government subsidises the airlines. they do not feel the $$ crunch. It is when those planes fly less then 1/2 full when they gripe. most municipalites leave within 100 miles of major airports - the wait in line  - well just drive to that major airport and fly.. save us a buck or 10..

  6. All depends on what you mean.  It’s still an airline, the head managers and board members are still making big bucks, the mechanics and flight crew are getting the short end of the stick.

Are the aircraft safe?  They are safe to operate, but that changes from day to day depending on maintenance and if they are fixed properly.  Not to mention if all the AD’s are complied with in accordance with the AD and not just someone judgment call.

American was NOT made a scape goat, they did NOT comply with an AD as written.  American chose not to comply completely with an AD so it has nothing to do with the FAA and Southwest Airlines.  And yes there is more to the story this is why American put their MD-80 fleet on the ground.  They knew what they did was wrong and to continue to operate would of put them in the same place as Southwest Airlines.  So they chose to ground MD-80 fleet, which was a good thing and fix the AD problem.
