  1. All the mothers in the Joy Luck Club went to America so their daughters could have better lives. The mothers all had various misfortunes in their own lives in China, so they thought by going to America, their daughters wouldn't have to go through the same kind of ordeal they went through themselves.


  2. Chinese mothers go to America to get away from their misfortune. Waverly however briefly, gets instant fame (another example.)
