How are the points and how are the standard markups determined ? What affect does the dow have on a retail store?

  1. It is the average of the top thirty US stocks. It is price weighted. hich means the highest priced of the 30 stocks have more influence on the average. Sorry I don't understand the rest of your question.

There are many Dow Jones Indices, but the one everybody knows about is the Dow Jones Industrial Average.  It's a collection of 30 stocks, chosen by the Dow Jones corporation.  The 30 stocks that make up the list are big names that everyone's heard of(IBM, Home Depot, Dell, Exxon Mobile, etc).  To get the value of the Dow, you add together last trading price of each of the stocks, and then divide that number by a divisor(the current number is 0.122834016

    As far as what effect it has on a retail store, I haven't the foggiest idea what you are reffering to there, but I hope this helps.
