  1. nikon d60 is really wonderful camera

  2. The 18-55mm AF-S VR is excellent

The D60 has some nice new features but does not outperform the D40.

I would buy the D40 and use the extra money to buy a nice flash or cards.

  3. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url...

that's the http://amazon.com link for the NEW nikon d60 digital single lens reflex camera..

    Is it any good ?

    No, it's not a " good " camera, it's a " great" camera.

    a) it has a large two and a half inch screen, so you can easily review all of your settings, and review your work however, you can't use the screen in a live view mode.  Which is a little upsetting, nikon couldn't of done better in that department ( but don't worry, as long as you know what you're doing, your pictures should come out. Hey, you said you read alot of photography books, so, yeah, you should know what you're doing right?

    b) it has a ten megapixel sensor, which is much better then the original nikon d40, you'll be able to capture alot of detail, and you definitely aren't going to get any bad pictures ( just make sure that you don't go above ISO 400, because the images come back grainy, but that's to be expected on all those DSLR's.

Those are just two great benefits of the nikon d60 digital single lens reflex cameras, to see more you should visit

http://nikon.com, and navigate to the nikon d60 page :)

Is the 18-55mm VR lens any good ?

Yes, it's a good lens, VR stands for vibration reduction, which is truely necessary when you're trying to take pictures at low shutter speeds, and it counter-acts your hand-shaking, and that's something you need when you take picture. Perhaps the only down side is that it only has an 18-55mm focal length

which is actually equivalent to a digital 3x zoom, so you might want to get another lens if you like telephoto zoom :P
