How is the Ring from the Lord of the Rings able to give men/people/whoever power?

I know it can make someone invisible but how does it give you the power to rule over and control everything and everyone?

Since this epic tale is fantasy fiction, Tolkien kinda leaves that up to the reader.  Magic is the easiest answer, but the closest I can compare it to in reality is the power of Suggestion.  The Ring contained a significant amount of his power which he had access to but couldn't use.  So when someone put the ring on it was like they dialed Sauron's cell phone and he could manipulate through it.  How much they could be controlled depended on how strong a will and pure of heart they were.

it does not in effect give the person that much power but it allows the bearer the control over the other 9 lords, which when you put it all together would rule the world, back in the day of hobbits and golum. this is an amazing series and cannnot wait for the HOBBIT to be done it not far off and i know i will have a front row ticket no matter what the cost.

Other than making whoever wears it invisible, the One Ring gives the bearer no power. Sauron forged the Ring, and so he is it's master. It is said countless times in The Lord of the Rings trilogy that none can weild the Ring. It answers to Sauron alone, and has no other master. That is why it was the decision of the Council of Rivendell to destroy the Ring instead of trying to use it against Sauron, as they knew well that no one can.

And it certainly does not give the bearer the power to control the Ringwraiths, as others have answered here. If it did, do you not think the members of the Fellowship would have used it to control the Nine Lords when they were being attacked by them? Seriously...

when sauron forged the ring in the fire at mount doom he put a portion of his own power into the ring, when someone else wears it it gives them a little bit of his power, the one ring gives the wearer control over the nine former kings who wear rings, with all this power one could be expected to be able to control middle earth
