I know that it is given a grade between 1 and 6, but how is that score converted and added to the total writing score?

  1. It's a third of the writing score (200 points). It's scored by two people, who each give it a number out of 6. The two scores have to within 1 of each other (so like 3+4, not 3+5). If they're too different, then a "master scorer" comes along, scores it, and that number is doubled. I think it's a linear conversion. The score you get, out of twelve, times 200. On a practice test, I got all the grammar questions right, but only a 7 (total) on the essay, and the writing section overall score was a 720. (7/12 of 200 = 117, which seems right. 117 [essay] + 400 [grammar] + 200 [200 is the lowest score you can get] equals about 720).

  2. Oh. When I took my SAT last year I got a 6 on mine. That's what I was going to tell you.. that they grade it 1-6.

But I have no idea how it's scored and converted.

    Sorry. Can't help you there.
