Question:

How is the hole in the ozone layer contributing to global warming?

Firstly is the hole in the ozone layer expanding or shrinking? and also, would Global Warming still be happening if the hole was shrinking? Are they directly linked?

Are there any other scientific explanations of the effects of global warming?

  1. Hello!?! Are you kidding me, not every planet is like Pluto (ohh yeah that's right, not a planet, opps) Venus has always been a gas ball, which means it has an atmosphere. True, the warming of the Earth has happened in the past and the way we know this is why? Ice cores! There like tree rings, they tell us loads of stuff on our Earth's past climate including its temperature. From that we have been able to calculate our planets general climate and its fluctuations, it ends up looking like a wave in the end. Here's the difference NOW, the Earth has never warmed as fast or become as hot as it is now, that is why there is a concern. The hole in the ozone was created primarily from CFC's which is a chemical that is found in everything from arousal cans to air conditioners. I think (not entirely sure on this) that when they react with the ozone layer made of O3  the gap is created. Don't think their directly linked though.

  2. Global warming is a totally natural part of a planetary cycle of warming and cooling. What do you think ended the last Ice Age? I'll give you a clue - it wasn't cars or factories as it was a bit early for them to exist.

Planetary warming is caused by solar activity - it's not caused by anything else.

Warming and cooling is not exclusive to our planet either. It is happening across our solar system and as none of the other planets in our solar system have any atmosphere - well, in Earth terms - you can discount the ozone layer.

Global warming will happen - you cannot fight it, you cannot prevent it. You can however prepare for it and accept that it will change peoples lives.

  3. I think the hole in the ozone went away when the kooks latched on to global warming. Just closed up and disappeared.

  4. Overpopulation comparable to natural earth resources being renewed by nature. Factories/vehicles/airplanes emit exhaust bad on the environment. Destroys the ozone layer. Which protects us from the suns harmful rays. Ice in Anartic area melting rapidly.

google for better answers. Ozone and global warming.

  5. Only in a minor way.  The wikipedia article on the interactions is actually very good.

With regard to other scientific explanations, this site is excellent.

  6. Because of the hole the sun rays are falling directly on the earth without being absorbed by the ozone layer. This increas the temprature of the earth so we can say that the hole in the ozone layer iscontributing to global warming.

  7. There is no connection.

The hole in the ozone layer is allowing harmful ultraviolet radiation in, where it can cause skin cancer.

GW is allegedly being caused by CO2 and other gases reflecting infrared radiation back down to the surface, causing a net warming effect.  Normally this infrared (heat) radiation would escape into space.

Recently the ozone hole over anartica has been described as "shrinking", and that is thought to be attributable to the USA's ban on the manufacture of freon for airconditioning systems

  8. in general, they're not related.

global warming would be happening if there was no ozone hole.

global warming does not make the ozone hole expand or shrink.

in fact, the ozone hole does allow a bit more radiation in in the summer months, when the sun in constant.  but compared to the other cause(s) of global warming, this is minimal.

the ozone hole is shrinking, slowly.  we've now pretty much eliminated CFCs, which were the primary cause.  they are pretty hearty chemicals, so it'll take many years for what we're already dumped into the atmosphere to degrade.  however, scientists have seen some shrinkage of the hole in the last few years.

global warming that we're currently experiencing is related to the increase in atmospheric CO2.  that's what the science has been showing for many years.  that's what the IPCC group said.  THAT'S WHAT PRESIDENT BUSH SAID.  and that's what the Nobel Prize committee said.

it is true that water (clouds) have a much greater effect.  but they are not changing.  it's true that all of the energy comes from the sun.  but that's not changing (contrary to what deniers would like to confuse the argument with).  what is changing is the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

it is certainly true that it has been both warmer, and colder in the past.  but you, and 6 billion other people, do not live in the past.  today's civilization has matured in the climatic conditions that exist today.  any change at all is likely to have negative consequences.

both warming and cooling have been the result of natural causes in the past.  no-one's arguing that point.  however, the warming today is not the result of a natural cause.  it's the result of our releasing all of the carbon that's been stored in coal and oil for millions of years.

if you really are interested in the reasons, Bob posted a couple of good links above.  do not go to junkscience, co2science, or the like.  they are funded by the energy industry, whose only interest is in not changing our energy use.  they don't care what you think.  is it real?  is it fixable?  do India and China have to fix it first?  is it natural?  can we afford to fix it?  will it ruin our economy?  if they can get enough people to doubt, for any reason at all, they can continue to sell carbon, and make billions in profits.

be assured, it will cost a lot to fix.  the longer we wait, the more it will cost.  the longer we wait, the greater the chance that it will be to late to fix.  the longer we wait, the longer the rest of the world will wait.

recently, there was a world conference on climate change.  the US is the only major country that is refusing to address the problem in a real way.  what they said was, "The world would like the US to lead the way in addressing climate change.  But, if the US will not lead, then at least get out of the way so that the rest of the world can take the lead."  that's a very sad commentary on the standing of this country in the eyes of people around the world.
