How is the level of microbial control by farmers measured by the dairy company?

  1. A long time ago microbe count was measured in parts per million by USDA inspectors.  They would take monthly samples if the count was acceptable, and, I suspect, more frequent samples if the count was borderline or unacceptable.  Failure on a USDA inspection resulted in a ban on milk pick-ups until the deficiencies found were corrected.

    The USDA website should be able to provide more information.
