  1. I was stationed there for 6 years.  I did two tours there and loved every freaking minute of it.  I can't answer your question unless I know what school you're going to.  Officer?  Enlisted?  Married?

Basically, much of the living quarters for enlisted soldiers around BAMC is new.  But much of the NCO and officers quarters on post is old.  If you're new to the Army and going to be say, a medic.  You're going to be housed with a ton of other soldiers on one floor.  Sucks but that's training when you're new.

If you're going to advance medical schooling ie, nursing or MD/PA you have choice to live on or off post--again this may be limited by your rank and or availability of quarters on post.

I'll update this more if you give more info.

    GL--you'll love Fort Sam.

  2. Never been to Sam Houston, but I heard it has some of the best living quarters in the US.  Chances are, it'll be just like a college dorm.  You'll be bunked in rooms of 2, 4, and sometimes 8 guys.  Most likely with a large community bathroom, sometimes a smaller one just for your room.  It'll be pretty nice though.  Since you'll still be in training, you'll be limited on all your amenities, but it should still be pretty comfortable.
