  1. You dont want to buy the JIC for home defense because they charge you extra for junk you dont need.

    A normal model 500 persuader is all you need.. no reason to have the tube and survival gear.

    The model 500 is the best pump shotgun you can get for home defense and its the only pump to pass military spec.

    Dont use bird shot.. use number 2 buck shot. Bird shot is for tiny birds.. I have been peppered with it before. The idea is to disable your attacker as quickly as possible and bird shot is only going to do that at a VERY close range.

  2. I prefer pump-action shotgun for home defense for a number of reasons;

    1;You can use solid rounds (slugs) or shot

    2;When using shot, you do not have to worry as much about your backdrop because of less penetration (you should still keep an eye on it regardless though!)

    3; very simple to use; pump - turn safety off - aim - fire.

    4; its as reliable as you are. You're the one operating the reload action, not the blowback/gas like in an auto.

    5; gives you a little more to "hold on to" in a stressful situation. My mother had an incident a few weeks ago where she grabbed a handgun for defense rather than a shotgun. Her hands were shaking from the fear/adrenaline and I doubt that she would have been able to make a stable shot with it. Plus, it is easier to keep aware of your muzzle direction when wielding a long gun, and is thus safer.

    6; wider spread radius when compared to solid rounds. If you are using the right choke in your shotgun, you should be able to get a pretty decent spread. This will make it considerably easier to hit your target the first time.

    7; large variety of loads available, especially in 12ga. I recommend buckshot for home defense. DO NOT, I repeat D-O N-O-T use loads with bacon rinds/rock salt in them. You WILL get yourself into a pile of legal trouble should you ever use it on someone. You should NEVER go for your gun unless you mean to use it for what it is meant; to kill. Otherwise, go with ye' ole Louisville slugger or a hockey stick.

    If you remember only one thing I've told you, please remember this; make sure that you know the laws for home defense in your area. Remember, there can be a million implications to shooting someone, even if they are in your home. Practice is also a vital key to self/home defense. Remember.

    In conclusion; I think that the Just In Case is a great home defense weapon. It has a pistol grip and shorter barrel than standard shotguns, so it will also be easier to maneuver around walls/etc. Mossberg shotguns are very decent and reliable weapons, especially considering the price range they are in.

  3. Use buckshot NOT birdshot! Don't listen to anyone who recommends birdshot.  Buckshot is meant for big mammals (people are big mammals).  Birshot is for little birds (people are not little birds!).
