You fall asleep and wake up to find that you are a Year 12 student about to sit a chemistry exam- as lots of students do. Fortunately you notice a question about the periodic table. It reads: How is the periodic table arranged? Make comments on the trends that you can recognise on the table.

How would you answer this question?

  1. Basically they are arranged into periods horizontallu with increasing atomic mass, it also takes into account the electronic configuration.

Then they are groups vertically, the members of each groups possess similar characteristics such as reactivity due to their valence electrons

  2. The periodic table is arranged into groups, which are vertical columns of elements, and periods, which are horizontal across the table. The elements themselves are arranged by increasing atomic number. Groups are arranged so that elements with similar properties fall into the same vertical column. Periods are arranged so that the filling of the quantum shell is displayed.

  3. The periodic table has many characteristics. For one thing, it is arranged in an increasing value of atomic number from left to right, top to bottom, with the noble gases at the far right. Also, elements are categorized into groups (vertical) and periods (horizontal). These categories determine the nature of the elements.

Also, there are trends associated some of the elements' values, like their sizes and oxidation states. The trends also includes freezing point and melting point, and boiling point.

I'm not quite sure with what the trend is: the point is that there exist trends in the arrangement of these elements.
