  1. OK, so this guy is trans-gendered.

He was born XX (female genotype) with uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. His body makes the egg, and he needs someone else's sperm to get fertilized.

When he self-identified as male, he had bilateral radical mastectomy to remove the b*****s (bad idea if you want to get pregnant -- now he can't breastfeed), did whatever he did down below to make him look male (ex implant of false gonads, penile construction, etc -- aesthetically OK but minimal functionality).  Upped his endogenous androgens with testosterone therapy (now held for pregnancy).

Contemplate this, for what it's worth: there are women out there that are genetically XY (male) but because they are testosterone insensitive, they develop as female -- undescended testes in the pelvis, with b*****s and v****a but *no uterus* -- and they typically feel like and self-identify as a woman, but can't carry a pregnancy without the womb.

IMHO, I bet this guy/gal, despite the underlying psychosocial complications, will be a *better,* more self-aware parent than a helluva lot of inept and abusive parents I have witnessed in the hospital/clinics (ex: drunk mother of 3 brought into ER by her neglected kids on a schoolday morning for a "headache")-- after seeing enough sh*tty parenting, makes you *gasp* contemplate the benefits of forced sterilization.

Medicine's little secrets -- the lay public doesn't really understand the genetic, endocrine or the behavioral neuropsychology behind sexual development and gender identity (evident in all these other posts, for example).  Nor does it truly understand the level of endogenous mental illness in society. Lots of people "pass" under the radar as "normal" when they're *not,* and carry enough behavioral morbidity to earn their very own ICD-9 (now -10) medical billing code to go with their DSM-IV (now -V) psychiatric code.

  2. It really doesn't matter if you "like" the idea.  Until you have lived the same life as a person who feels trapped by their gender, you will NEVER understand.

The answer to your question, however, is that when you have a gender re-assignment surgery, you LEGALLY become recognized as a person of the new gender.

  3. That's a VERY good question!!

--- By the way, if I teach a parrot how to "bark," could it be "legally" called a dog and gain access to buildings that disciminatorilly allow only seeing eye-dogs?

--- You know what, how many people will care about this stuff unless their precious, 11-year-old son gets nailed in the bathroom by some adolescent rapists at school?

---  Or, will little, 12-year-old Susie come home pregnant after the school restrooms are court-ordered to all be made unisex?

--- The worst part of the lie of the pregnant "man," (-actually a  woman),is the crime against the child that could be born to them.   So much for all this child-advocacy babble, huh?!

  4. i dont believe its true

  5. I've wondered too.... you could be legally if you just remove your b*****s?? I'd have thought it would take the rest...

Really it's no big deal that this person is having a child if the rest is still built like a woman. I read that they just did the usual sperm bank way...

  6. Law be damned, SHE'S NOT. I'm no religious freak either, I go with science, and science tells me that's a woman. It's the A1 stupidest story out there. SHE'S not a man. Where's the story. I just watched a clip from the show. These people are really screwed up. It seems one of their main purposes will be to parade their kid around as some kind of Messiah or something.

    SAD.

  7. Mr Beatie, born a woman, has had a chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy, but decided to keep his female reproductive organs.

so since he got his name changed and stated taking testorones and stuff

  8. Thats it...s*****e is not a man.  s*****e is a woman who had her lady bits cut out, and calls herself a man.  s*****e still has her reproductive organs.  Claims she was a female trapped in a mans body....but wants to have a baby...can't have it both ways.  Not a man. Mentally unstable.

  9. There is this whole legal process you go through for a s*x change operation and he did that, not he kept the uterus. Normally, it is removed when they construct the male organ, but not in this case.

  10. U must have seen this on Opra but the man whose pregnant is biologically a women he had surgery to remove his breast and seal the v****a but kept his ovaries and have a male reproductive organ which they say it grew when taking male hormones pill.

But he is biologically a women in a mens body but being pregnant is a wondrous thing i think its time to give women a break and let man carry the baby instead of the women.

    And also:

On Thursday, Oprah introduced Oregon resident Thomas Beatie to anyone who hadn't yet heard of him. Beatie, a transgender man who is legally male, is six months pregnant with his and his wife's child. La Winfrey called the expectant situation "a new definition of what diversity means for everybody."

And everybody, it seems, is interested. Over the past seven days, searches for "pregnant man" rose 26,879%. Demand for "thomas beatie" grew more than 3,000%. Interest in "oregon man pregnant" has swelled 461%.

As for the skeptics who typed "man claims he is pregnant" and "pregnant man?" into Search, we can answer: Mr. Beatie retained his female reproductive organs. Because he has a uterus, he can get pregnant and carry a baby to term.

In Buzz, some of the most popular articles from the past week focused on the bun in Beatie's oven. As we posted earlier, Boing Boing and Huffington Post were two of the first sources to surface with articles on the story. Since then, the Huffington Post scored another hit with an item revealing more photos of the fertile daddy.

LilSugar, Yahoo! News, and People.com have also polled well with Buzz readers. The People.com article, which offers an exclusive video clip from the Oprah appearance, was one of the most voted-on articles in Buzz after the show aired.

So has this childbearing event really redefined what diversity means for everybody? The tale certainly seems to have people thinking about gender issues. We've noted a surge in queries for "transgendered" and "transgender pregnancy." Lookups for "pregnant man" have flowed in from every state in the U.S. and every age group.

  11. Because stupidly people are allowed to legally change their gender after certain surgeries, counselling, and treatments. Personally i think its wrong. People are what they are born. Its obviously a mental condition that needs treated, but not through surgery.
