I've done a PGCE in London and I hope to return to Ireland next year. I was wondering how the primary ed system is different. I know that Irish is the main language, and children have to buy books, bring lunch. Are there any other major differences? Is the standard a lot higher in primary schools in Ireland than in England? Thanks.

  1. Ireland is an island. You'll find different systems in the Republic and Northern Ireland.

However - the main difference is that the standard is significantly higher on this island than in England.

  2. hi you

even doe Ireland is smaller then the UK in size the standard is higher then the UK you will also find that some school are in prefabs or even prefabs and building of course Irish is also done in the primary here

  3. Irish isnt the main language for like 90% of Ireland, unless you move to a gealtacht region. We study it like you would French but other than that. The standard isnt high, I mean its primary school, no1 expects anything from anyone that young? You finish when you are around 12 and move onto secondary school.

  4. You might have better luck under the Education & Reference section as there's a Teaching subsection and there's definitely evidence there are some teachers responding to questions there, whether there are Irish ones.  You could also try this forum:
