  1. rain gauge is the instrument which is used to measure rainfall...this instrument is placed on a level surface and has some fixed dimensions...when rainfall occurs..the height to which this rain gauge is filled with water determines the amount of rainfall ...this height is measured in mm..therefore we have rainfall in mm...

    please correct me if i was not completely correct...coz i am not that confident about this
