  1. I hope you are planning to be there for Carnaval 2008.

I recently spent three months working and traveling in Colombia.I was working in the Cartagena/Barranquilla/Santa Marta area. I had a great time and had no problems.I also traveled on my days off to many other areas including as far as Leticia the gateway to the Amazon without incident .

While in Colombia I lived with a friend for awhile in barrio Lacumbre in Barraquilla and later in Santa Marta.

Most of the crime(s) in Colombia as well as most countries in Latin America are petty crimes or crimes of opportunity such as pickpockets and stealing items that tourists set down like day packs or cameras etc. Although I have heard stories of violent crimes for years I have only seen it once in Nicaragua which, according to statistics,is the second safest country after Uruguay in Latin America. The same warnings exist for many of the large cities in the U.S. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions or concerns. 2. the fisrt answert is pretty accurate! I agree.. now colombia with the new president has been very safe and there has been polls by interpol and international services stating that now all cities in colombia specially medellin is safer then Washington DC. Barranquilla is very safe and with carnaval coming up the city gets safer and is an awesome time to be there!
