  2. your boss works out how little he/she can get away with paying you... hey presto... your wage calculation... cynical...? I think not!! welcome to the world of the wage slave.... cynical..? definitely.....

Depends which country you live in.  In Australia its generally 38hours per week unless stated when originally employed.  This standard time then determines how you will be paid in line with minimum wage standards either by state or federal legislation or award.  This will allow you to calculate the standard wage if you know what the particular rate your are to be paid given the job.
