  1. Very hot. And the air conditioning in most places doesn't really cool very well. That is, if they have air conditioning at all.

Gelato costs about the same as ice cream in the U.S., and it's delicious.

  2. The weather will be hot, and probably humid.  Everything near tourist areas will be very expensive.  If you go 300 meters from the tourist areas, things will just be expensive.

  3. Bring lots of sun screen lotion. Bring binoculars (some of the art in Rome is too large and awkwardly positioned to fully appreciate with the naked eye, especially ceilings like the Sistine Chapel and Roman monuments like Triumphal Arches). Bring deodorant or perfume/cologne (it's not just for the heat, as the amount of stale tobacco and other pollutants in Rome can make your body reek. Italians smoke several packs a day. And they do it in restaurants, banks, hotels, elevators, train platforms... practically anywhere/everywhere. Then there's the emissions from the cars/motor bikes and littering...)

As far as weather goes, Rome roasts in summer. Expect sweltering heat and humidity, with no air conditioning for relief. Many Romans head north (or to the sea) during the summer, leaving it for the tourists. Though you might begin to question how much you actually want them there after a long day of travel (see above, smoking, smog, and trash).

Having said that, Rome is a magnificent treasure chest of art and culture. Italian food is generally quite good. And this was after all the capital not only of Italy, but the entire Western World for 1,000 years. You'll probably end up having a good time regardless of the minor annoyances.
